Espresso is often considered the second most popular drink in the world only behind water. However, some polls place it third behind coffee. Espresso machines brew the drink by forcing out a small amount of very hot water under pressure through coffee beans that have been very finely ground. The result is called a “shot” and is one ounce per serving. It can be consumed as it is or it can be used as a base for cappuccino, latte, macchiato, ristretto, or long black. Espresso machines have come a long way over the past few decades. Prices range from about $35 for a stovetop machine to as much as $400 for a countertop machine that will have a higher capacity and several useful features.
