The first electric mixer was invented in 1885 and was primarily used in commercial kitchens. For home use, there are essentially two types, handheld, and stand-up. Both have rotating metal beaters that rotate rapidly mixing ingredients and are powered by an electric motor. Handheld models tend to cost less whereas stand-up mixers will cost more initially but are actually easier to uses as they are placed on a countertop and the bowl stays in place while mixing. With a handheld mixer, you have to manage the movement of the beaters as well as hold the bowl with your other hand. Most consumers agree that investing in a countertop stand-up mixer is more functional and worth the extra investment in the long run. Kitchen Aid, Cuisinart and Hamilton Beach are popular mixer brands.
